About Mac's Sujo - dam of What a Brudder and a little something about What a Brudder
Excerpts from
the 1983 Cow Horse Magazine article, "Mare Power Supreme". |
||
August is the last month of the 1983 mare power months in the Cow Horse Magazine. We've chosen mares equal to the stature of the cover position. This years mares are outstanding; Tasa Tivio, Miss Bar Boogie, and … MAC'S SUJO 1950-1981. Mac's Sujo is the dam of one NCHA futurity finalist, one CRCHA snaffle bit futurity champion, One CRCHA snaffle bit futurity reserve champion, and two CRCHA supreme reined cow horses. She lived her entire life in Georgia and passed away in 1981, but her production record lives on in 5 foals right here in CA. Each of these foals is outstanding in the Cow Horse industry. Kit's Smoke, Smoke's Belle, Nuthin But Smoke, and Dr. Sujo have proven their performance ability. The fifth, a three year old stallion named What A Brudder, is a full brother to Dr. Sujo and has yet to have his shot at the title. The stallion selected for Mac Sujo was Doc's Sugs Brudder producing the 1979 brown stallion Dr. Sujo a full brother to the 1980 bay stallion What a Brudder. The ability of Macs Sujo to produce superior foals is a characteristic she may have inherited from her sire Fourble Joe. His get earned 23 ROMs, 6 of which were AQHA champions, an impressive statistic. Forable had 261 registered get. Of his get, 83 were performers, 36 earned 527 halter points, 30 earned 972 open working pts. 8 earned 9 youth halter points, and 192 youth working pts. The mating of Macs Sujo to Doc Sugs Brudder is no fluke either. The Doc Bar story bears out the success of breeding Three Bars to King. Doc Sugs Brudder is by Doc Bar a Three Bar's grand-son, and out of Bar Gal, a mare sired by Sugar Bars. Norman Bruce reflects that Mac's Sujo had a very smooth way of going and a very good disposition, making her an excellent youth mount. According to Benny Guitron and Pat Hubbard, the sons and daughters of Mac's Sujo inherited her good disposition and way of going, an important factor not only from a breeder's standpoint but also from a trainer's position. Macs Sujo, not only famous but also infamous: "To be become a Supreme Reined Cow Horse, the horse must be shown in the snaffle bit, hackamore, and a bridle and must win at least $15, 000 dollars". It was stated in this article that in 1983, Mac Sujo has two supreme reined cow horses to her credit. One on her way "Nuthin But Smoke" and a possible fourth waiting in the wings for his chance at stardom. That was her last her last colt "What A Brudder" a 1980 stallion. He had just been purchased for one of Pat Hubbert's clients and they had hopes that he would be on the West coast in time for the 1983 Fall Futurity. In the spring of 2002 What A Brudder was purchased by Dianne Sommerfeld of Sommerfeld Performance Horses from Pat Hubbert who had acquired full ownership and was using him to breed to his own mares and a few outside mares. In the interim with limited showing and with Pat Hubbert aboard, What a Brudder earned a ROM in Working Cow Horse and a ROM in Cutting. In 1999 at age 19, "Brudder" qualified for the world in just 2 shows in 2 different events. In 2002 shortly after being acquired by Dianne Sommerfeld, at 22 years of age Brudder took first place in the AQHA Cutting in Fallon, Nevada with Pat Hubbert aboard. With only 40 get, Brudder is listed in the top 50 AQHA standing stallion list for AQHA Champions sired. Dianne Sommerfeld believes that "They just don't make 'em like they used to!" |
